IU football game day guide: parking, tailgating & where to stay

Hoosier football has never been hotter, and Memorial Stadium Saturdays now fill Bloomington months in advance. Here's the local playbook — how to get in, where to tailgate, and how to skip the worst of it entirely by sleeping within walking distance.

The golden rule: don't fight stadium traffic

Memorial Stadium sits on Bloomington's north side, at 17th Street and Dunn. On game days the surrounding corridors — North Dunn, the 45/46 Bypass, and Fee Lane — jam solid from about three hours before kickoff. Official lots require permits, and cash lots fill early and charge accordingly.

The locals' answer is simple: stay north of campus and walk. If your weekend home base is within a half mile of the stadium, game day stops being logistics and starts being fun. That's exactly why we bought where we did — Rose Bowl House and Cig's Hoosier Retreat are both under a half mile from the gates.

Tailgating like you've done it before

• Arrive early. Tailgate fields north of the stadium open in the morning for noon kicks — the good spots go fast.
• Bring your own everything. Tents, chairs, cornhole, coolers. There's no rental infrastructure; veterans roll in fully equipped.

• Plan the post-game. Kirkwood Avenue and downtown fill up fast after the final whistle. If your house is walkable, you can beat the rush, regroup, and head out on your own schedule.
